The Maltese is a member of the Bichon family and is one of the oldest European breeds. They are directly related to the Bichon and Bolognese. All came from the same initial breed, simply developing on different islands created their different traits, as well as their difference names. The Maltese came from Malta, the Bolognese came from Bologna, and the Bichon Tenerife came from Tenerife. Maltese have a beautiful mantel of long, silky, white hair. This is their crowning glory. They may sometimes have a hint of lemon or tan on their ears, although this is undesirable in the show ring. They are short, petite sized dogs and have short triangular drop ears. Maltese are gentle-mannered and affectionate, yet playful and full of animation. Despite their size, they posses the vigor needed for an excellent companion. They are a healthy and happy breed, and can live for at least 15 years.

Maltese Breed Profile

The Maltese came from Bologna, and the Bichon Tenerife came from Tenerife. They are a healthy and happy breed, and can live for at least 15 years! The Maltese is intelligent and easy to train, but is very strong-willed. They enjoy being groomed, petted and fondled.

Type: Companion Dog

Height: 5 - 10 inches.
Weight: 4 - 7 lbs., though 7 lbs. is disqualifying.

Colors: Pure white. slight lemon or tan markings on ears are permissible, but undesirable.
Coat: Maltese have no under coat. They have a long, straight, flat coat that is silky in texture.

Temperament: Maltese are friendly and alert. They are very lively as puppies, running around the house in sudden bursts of happiness. They are agile, entertaining and happy dogs. Maltese are generally good with older children, and are fairly adaptable. They are comforters, fastidious and loyal. They are wary of strangers, but friendly. They are trusting and fearless as well. They can be prone to anxiety if left alone for long periods of time, but are otherwise playful and fun.
With Children: It may not tolerate younger children, but they get along great with older children.
With Pets: No, does not mix well with other pets.

Watch-dog: Very High. The Maltese is a very alert dog and will bark at anything unusual.
Guard-dog: Very Low. They are generally friendly, and although fearless, much too small to defend.

Care and Training: Extensive coat care is needed for the Maltese. Shampoo once a week and daily brushing is essential to keep the coat from matting. Special attention is needed to keep the eyes clean as staining is possible. Indoor activity will suffice for exercise, but Maltese will enjoy a walk or a run in the park. They should be trained from puppyhood not to bark unwarranted or bite, as teething causes most puppies to want to bite everything. But all training should be done with a positive, firm attitude.
Learning Rate: High. Obedience - High. Problem Solving - High. Maltese enjoy their owners and whatever they wish to teach them, and they are also very intelligent little dogs.

Activity: Indoors - Very High. Outdoors - Medium. Puppies sometimes like to zoom around the house in "figure eights" in a sudden burst of joy.
Special Needs: Attention, grooming and socialization.
Living Environment: An apartment is fine for the Maltese as they are a small, relatively quiet dog if trained. The Maltese makes a good dog for the elderly if they can socialize and take time to groom and play with them. They are very adaptable. The best owner for this breed would be a family or individual with enough time to care for the Maltese, living in a suburban, rural or city environment.

Life Span: 14 - 15 years.
Litter Size:
2 - 4 puppies.

Country of Origin: Malta
History: The Maltese origins come from the island of Malta dating back to about 1500 B.C. They are thought to have been brought to the island by Phoenician traders, and may have had their origins elsewhere. A record of a Greek historian named Strabo reported in 25 A.D. that "There is a town in Sicily called Melita whence are exported many beautiful dogs called Canis Melitei." This may point to an origin in Italy. These small dogs were very popular from their beginnings. A Roman governor of Malta was reported to like his Maltese so much that he had poems written about it and a painting portrait made of his little female dog. In the 1500s, one writer recorded a Maltese being sold for $2,000! Their popularity rose during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I as a companion to the women of the royal court. At this time, Dr. Johannes Caius wrote about the breed, "They are called Meliti, of the island of Malta...they are very small indeed and chiefly sought after for the pleasure and amusement of women who carried them in their arms, their bosoms, and their beds..." The Maltese is featured in many famous paintings.

TEACUP MALTESE PUPPY TRAINING INFORMATION

Having the correct equipment when training your Teacup Maltese Puppy is essential. It needs to be fit for the purpose to get the best out of your training session. So what is the best equipment for your Teacup Maltese Puppy for training?

Whatever equipment you use with your Teacup Maltese puppy, do check it regularly. Check:
• for wear and tear.
• that it still fits correctly. This is especially important with growing puppies.
• for signs of chewing, which could weaken it.

Essential equipment for all dogs:
• A normal collar with either a buckle or clip. It should not have any tightening action, such as a choke or half-check chain.
• A lead. A lead of 4-6 foot is ideal. If it is shorter than this, you may find that your dog will pull more, as he cannot get away from the tight feeling. If it is longer, it can be difficult to control your dog. Most people prefer nylon, leather or canvas leads. Chain can be used, but this can be very uncomfortable.
• Some form of poop scoop is also essential each time you take your dog out.

Alternative equipment:
Head collars work on a similar principle to a horse's head collar, in that they control the head. They are extremely useful with dogs that pull, jump up at passers-by and are more difficult to control. It will not teach your Maltese puppy how to behave, but it will make it easier to control him while you are teaching. Many Teacup Maltese puppies are not impressed at first and may scratch and shake their heads. Take your time and introduce it gradually, following the manufacturer's guidelines.

Harnesses are flavored by many people when walking their Teacup Maltese puppies or dogs. It means that if the dog does pull, it will not hurt his neck. However, many Teacup Maltese puppies or dogs can pull more strongly with a harness, and dogs who are required to pull, for example, sled dogs and tracking dogs, would wear a harness for this purpose.

For Teacup Maltese puppies  who pull, there are relatively new types of harness available. They are designed to help while teaching a  puppy not to pull. They work by putting pressure in a different place when the dog pulls, and therefore he cannot lean into it as he does with a collar. An extending or retractable lead consists of a box which you hold, with a line that extends as your dog pulls. There is a brake to stop. These are useful when you are in a situation where your dog can have more freedom, but cannot safely be off his lead. Please be careful - if they are used near traffic, puppies can still be involved in accidents.

A long line, or old washing line, can be useful when your Teacup Maltese puppy can have some freedom but is not safe off the lead, or when teaching a Teacup Maltese puppy to come when called. Some people find it difficult to use as the excess lead can get tangled. Take care with big or strong dogs - consider wearing gloves to avoid rope burn on your hands. It may be beneficial to use under guidance from an experienced trainer.

TEACUP MALTESE VACCINATION SCHEDULE

Please see your veterinarian for his/her opinion.

Bringing a new Teacup Maltese puppy home is a something that is highly anticipated, but it also comes with responsibilities. After the owner, the veterinarian is the most important person in helping maintain the health of a Teacup Maltese puppy. If you do not have a vet, be sure to check with the breeder or family or friends, and get recommendations for a good dog health provider. Choose a veterinarian that has an office, which is convenient, close, orderly, and clean, with office hours convenient to your schedule. Be sure the vet is someone you feel comfortable talking with. To ensure that your new Teacup Maltese puppy is healthy, you should arrange to take him to the veterinarian for an examination within the first couple of days after bringing your new pet home.

The first time you take your new Teacup Maltese puppy for a checkup, the vet will give your puppy a thorough examination to rule out any major health problems, congenital defects, or other problems that could affect other house pets or your family's health. If possible, take a sample of the puppy's stool in, so the vet can check for worms or parasites.

The vet will start a chart with the information you provide such as the puppy's name, date of birth, and other history. He or she will record your Teacup Maltese  puppy's weight, examine his mouth, throat, teeth, ears, eyes, listen to his lungs and heart, and check his breathing rates and pulse. The vet will also check for a hernia, takes his temperature, and examine the puppy's anal area and genitals.

If you have any questions, be sure to discuss them with your veterinarian. You might ask about a vaccine schedule, pet health insurance, identification microchip, what to feed your new Teacup Maltese puppy, basic care or behavior. It is often helpful to write out any questions you have and take them when you go, so you do not forget to ask about any issues you want to discuss. Many vets make a point of instructing the new owners about heartworm and other preventive care, sterilization surgery, and nutrition.

The mother's colostrum or first milk right after puppies are born provides them with a natural resistance against just about all diseases for the first several weeks or their life. After that, they require vaccinations to keep their immune systems healthy, along with providing the puppies with protection against many serious and sometimes life-threatening diseases. Every veterinarian has their own preferred protocol regarding vaccinations. Most veterinarians recommend that the Teacup Maltese puppy get its first vaccinations anywhere from six to nine weeks old. Normally they receive a booster shot every three to four weeks, until the puppy is sixteen weeks old. After their last puppy booster shots are complete, most vets give booster vaccines on an annual basis along with the dogs' checkup. Ask your veterinarian about their vaccine policy.

Many veterinarians provide core vaccines for canine distemper, rabies, infectious hepatitis- and respiratory disease (Canine Adenovirus-2), corona virus, canine parvovirus-2, kennel cough, parainfluenza, which are repeat vaccines given over a certain time.

Canine Distemper - Affecting a dog's nervous, gastrointestinal, and respiratory systems, canine distemper is a dangerous and extremely contagious viral disease. Often fatal, it is transmitted through an infected animal in their urine or through contact with fecal material, or even through the air. Symptoms of canine distemper include diarrhea, thick yellow-green eye or nose discharge, coughing, seizures, loss of appetite and fever.

Rabies - Transmitted through an infected animal's bite, rabies is a fatal disease. This nervous system infection causes paralysis and then death. Most states require Teacup Maltese puppies and dogs to have rabies vaccines, as it is a dangerous health threat to the public. Dogs with rabies become aggressive and bite without being provoked.

Infectious Canine Hepatitis (Adenovirus) - This is another highly contagious, contact disease that is passed from an infected animal their saliva, stool, or urine. Infectious canine hepatitis affects the Teacup Maltese puppy's cells that line their blood vessels, abdominal organs, kidneys and liver. The symptoms of this terrible disease include hemorrhaging, liver damage, abdominal tenderness and pain, depression, appetite loss, and an inflamed mouth or nose. Most infected dogs die within six to ten days, although a few make a very fast recovery.

Corona virus - This gastrointestinal tract viral infection is highly contagious, and spread by contact with an infected animals vomit, feces, or blood. Dogs or Teacup Maltese puppies  with corona virus have symptoms such as running a high fever, dehydration, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Canine Parvovirus - This disease usually affects puppies and is a highly contagious, common viral infection. Indications of this disease include vomiting, bloody diarrhea, dehydration, loss of appetite and fever.

Leptospirosis - This often-fatal bacterial disease spreads through urine contact, with some forms transmitted to humans. It causes extensive damage to a dog's kidneys, liver, and digestive tract. Some symptoms include bloody diarrhea, fever, mouth, tongue, and gum sores, abdominal pain, and jaundice.

For a puppy to build up resistance against parvovirus and the other viruses listed, a veterinarian starts the Teacup Maltese puppy on a vaccination schedule starting at six to 9 weeks old, and continuing every three or four weeks until the age of sixteen weeks. Usually six months later, the puppy receives a booster parvovirus vaccination and its rabies shot, which the law requires.

It is your duty as a responsible pet owner to make sure your puppy receives the preventative care needed from a qualified veterinarian, to keep them healthy and as safe as possible from diseases. Your goal should be a healthy, happy Teacup Maltese Puppy that has a good, nutritional diet, is free from worms, fleas, and other parasites, and protected against disease. Puppy vaccinations can and will save your Teacup Maltese puppy's life.

CARING FOR YOUR TEACUP MALTESE PUPPY

Teacup Maltese teeth - Teeth of Teacup Maltese toy dogs are often a problem. Some dogs and teacups retain their baby teeth too long, particularly the canine teeth. In this case, duplicate sets of teeth may be seen at the age of about 6 mos. Retained baby teeth can cause malocclusion, since they prevent adult teeth from growing into their proper position. These baby teeth should be removed by a veterinarian.

You should also clean your Teacup Maltese puppy's teeth on a regular basis.   I recommend three times per week.  Gum (or periodontal) disease is one of the most common problems causing formation of tartar bad breath, receded gums, loose or infected teeth and their eventual loss.

Teacup Maltese Ears - In drop-eared breeds such as Teacup Maltese, the ears should be kept clean and free of excess hair and debris. Your Teacup Maltese will alert you to problems by scratching or shaking his head and the ears will have a dark, smelly secretion. At this point, veterinarian care is advised.

Teacup Maltese and their nail care- Toe nails should be kept short. A good time to trim toe nails is after a bath while the Teacup Maltese puppy  is still wet as the quick is easier to see. Try to get the puppy used to this process from the start.   This will make it easier as the puppy matures.

Grooming your Teacup Maltese Puppy- Grooming the Teacup  Maltese coat is a particular concern of every prospective owner. The Maltese coat is not difficult to care for if you do a daily once-over with a pin brush or steel-tooth comb to remove any mats that may be forming. If you neglect the coat for any length of time and allow mats to build up, a grooming session to remove them will be a miserable experience for you as well as your Maltese.

You should brush your Maltese puppy's hair daily.  You can dilute some coat conditioner with water and lightly spray the coat as you brush to keep from breaking the hair and cut down static. Keep hair out of the eyes by either putting the hair in a single or double topknot, or keeping it trimmed over the eyes. The coat should be thoroughly brushed, with all mats removed, before bathing. For bathing, use a good quality shampoo designed for white dogs and a conditioner for long-haired breeds. After bathing, wrap the dog in a towel to remove excess water; then proceed to blow dry the coat, brushing the hair as it dries. Be sure your dryer is not too hot! Don't let your Maltese "air dry" - his coat will not look its best.

All Maltese would look best in their long, flowing coat of white hair, but as a pet owner, you may not be willing or have the time to spend keeping the hair clean, brushed and mat free. You do have other options such as a short cut which can be done periodically by a groomer.   You can ask your groomer to give your Teacup Maltese puppy - a "puppy cut".   They look really cute.  Ensure that you have a good groomer that can do a good job.

TEACUP MALTESE AND ANAL GLANDS

Anal glands are two, very small secretion glands that are located just to the outside and bottom of a Teacup Maltese's anus. These glands were used to allow a puppy or cat to mark its territory by secreting a thick, mucous substance that has a very strong and unpleasant odor. Most puppies no longer do this, but the anal sacs or glands still remain. In normal conditions the glands empty when the Teacup Maltese puppy has a bowel movement with the contraction of the anus forcing the mucous material from the glands. In some Teacup Maltese puppies and dogs the anal glands become stopped up and do not drain with a bowel movement or with natural friction, resulting in a painful condition known as an impaction. These impacted glands may cause the Teacup Maltese to stop and constantly lick at the area, or may, more commonly, cause the puppy to "scoot" across the floor, grass or carpet. Scooting is actually rubbing their bottom against the floor in an attempt to empty the glands and reduce the pressure. If this works, what is left is a nasty, smelly, foul substance all over your rug or floor that is often mistaken for fecal material, when in fact it is mucous from the anal glands. Often people believe that this scooting behavior is seen when the Teacup Maltese puppy has worms, and although that occasionally may be the case it is far more likely to be problems with blocked or impacted anal glands.

The reason that it is very important to check anal glands if your Teacup Maltese has a history of scooting on the ground or if it is a problem with the breed is because they can rupture and cause infections and problems that can be serious. If the gland does not empty correctly, it can continue to fill, eventually bursting through the interior wall of the anus or through the outer skin. As can be imagined this is a particularly bad area for infections, plus the rupture may continue to get worse as the Teacup Maltese puppy has natural bowel movements. If it becomes painful the Teacup Maltese may not want to go to the bathroom, leading to more impactions and possible problems. Often a ruptured anal sac or gland will first be noticed by a bloody discharge from the anus immediately after a bowel movement. Excessive licking of the area is also a sign that this has progressed beyond a simple impaction.

There are two different ways to empty or clear a puppy's anal sac. The first way is the simplest and should always be the first to try. Use disposable gloves or surgical gloves on your hands, as this can be messy and very foul smelling. Start by getting a clean cloth and soaking it in clear, warm water. Apply the warm cloth like a compress on the anus, holding the tail up and away from the area. You may wish to do this a few times to soften any material that may be caked or dried on the surface opening of the glands. Using the thumb and index finger gently push the bottom section of the anus, at about the four and seven o'clock positions towards the center. You should feel two hard, roundish lumps just under the skin that are the anal glands. With very gentle pressure a fairly liquid, gel like material should be pushed out of the openings just to the outside of the anus. A tissue can be used to wipe this secretion away. If the discharge is very thick and highly sticky or paste like in consistency it is likely that the glands will need to be emptied several times to get all the material out.

If, after a couple of attempts, no secretion or a very heavy paste-like substance is all that comes out, you should either move to a more internal option or contact your vet and have him or her perform this procedure. If you wish to do it yourself, you will need a small amount of lubricant such as Vaseline. Lubricate the index finger of a gloved hand with a small amount of Vaseline or other safe lubricant. Insert the finger gently into the anus and locate the anal sac on one side. Using a pincher like motion press the thumb and forefinger together, starting at the outside edge of the anal gland and moving towards the inside edge. This should release all material, but if it does not immediately stop and make and appointment with the vet. Continuing to try to drain the glands yourself can result in a rupture that is much more serious than leaving the glands impacted until the next day when you can get a vet's appointment.

It is very important to avoid using this second technique on small and toy dogs as most adult fingers as simply too large and will cause pain and discomfort. A vet or groomer that has practice in working with small and toy breeds is the best individual to perform this procedure on these tiny dogs.

Puppies may be fine for a few days and then start scooting again, even if you have just emptied the anal glands. This is not uncommon and the procedure may have to be repeated every three or four days until they have been fully emptied. The good news is that most puppies, once they understand what you are doing, will stand patiently while the procedure is done since they know they will feel much better when it is over.

Most vets recommend that puppies with anal gland problems or a history of impactions will benefit from a high fiber diet.
